Biblical Rules of Death, Part 5
Rule #5: Everyone will go to either Heaven or Hell
Heaven is generally understood as the place of eternal life for the righteous. That is not precisely accurate since there are several locations identified with eternal life. Also, the present Heaven is replaced (at a later time) with a “new heaven” (Revelation 21:1).
Heaven is the place of God’s throne. So, when we speak of heaven, we are usually talking about the place of eternal life, in the presence of God. The word suggests everything holy and wonderful!
Hell is generally understood as the place of eternal punishment. The description of Hell is also not entirely accurate. The Lake of Fire is the final place of punishment (Revelation 20:13-15). Hell is also called the place of Torment (Luke 16:28) and some translations use the word “Hades” but they are all the same place. It is a place of blazing fire where weeping and gnashing of teeth is normal (Matthew 13:42). I will be writing more about these things in later articles but for now, the word, Hell/Hades is an appropriate term.
The Berean Bible Society has published an excellent (if long) article about the locations. It is titled, “Hell, Sheol, Hades, Paradise, and the grave“. For those who wish to study this in-depth, the article is a great resource.
Revelation 20:13-15 “13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”
The Great White Throne Judgment (described above) is the last judgment and assigns all who die in sin to eternity in the Lake of fire. If you have not called upon Jesus Christ to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins, then you MUST do so immediately. There is no time to waste. We are all just one heart beat from eternity!
Today is the day to call upon Christ and be saved (Day of Salvation, 2 Corinthians 6:2). Romans 10:10 “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
1 – Define “Heaven” as a place.
2 – After the Great White Throne Judgment, where are the ungodly?
